Ms. Mercy Ramirez and Ms. Lily Swanson became business partners in 2001, when they joined their individual talents to run a preschool. In 2006, they were presented with the opportunity of opening a brand-new charter school in Pembroke Pines. Together, with the help of educational professionals, city officials, Charter School Support Services’ team guidance, and a knowledgeable mentor, Kidz Choice Charter School opened its doors in the fall of 2007, with 36 students in kindergarten through first grade.Kidz Choice Charter School has continued to grow, and in 2015, the school moved into a larger facility on N. Douglas Road in Pembroke Pines, FL. Kidz Choice is currently a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary charter school. Kidz Choice Charter’s philosophy is that skills learned in Elementary School are foundational and requisite for 21st century success.Ms. Swanson and Ms. Ramirez, along with Kidz Choice Charter School's teachers and staff, believe that, “Success is the ONLY Option;” therefore, they will continue to instill in students the desire to reach a high level of academic success to prepare them for future college-level coursework and careers.Ms. Ramirez and Ms. Swanson’s dedication is based, not only in curriculum implementation, but also in striving to foster in students a positive attitude toward self and peers, character traits of responsibility, tolerance, cooperation and respect to ensure future success in an ever-changing global economy.
Kidz Choice Charter School Kindergarten through 5th gradeKidz Choice Charter School, established in 2007, has come a long way since making its grand debut as a K-1 charter school, nestled in the heart of a Pembroke Pines strip mall; which consisted of two kindergarten classrooms, a first-grade class, three classroom teachers, 36 children eager to learn, paired with a passionate director, who had a dream of one day transforming her “doll-sized schoolhouse” into what others envisioned as a “real school,” based off looks alone. Mix all of these ingredients together and you have a recipe for success! I am sure you are asking yourself the same question as many others who passed it by, “How successful could a school, ‘nestled’ in a strip mall be, what made it so grand, without sufficient funding, to ensure students were equipped with the tools they need in order to succeed?’In contrast, what people may not realize, especially those who do not have children or are familiar with today’s education system, based off society alone, it takes a village to raise a child, alongside a tremendous amount of patience, positivity, and integrity, to say the least. Kidz Choice Charter School is extremely fortunate because they are known as more than a school. (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING , MATH) The United States has become a global leader, in large part, through the genius and hard work of its scientists, engineers and innovators. Yet today, that position is threatened as comparatively few American students pursue expertise in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (S.T.E.M.). Together these programs will identify and implement effective approaches, improving teaching and learning.Facilitate the dissemination and adoption of effective instructional practices, while enhancing students’ educational experiences.We are excited to announce that KCCS is promoting quarterly home challenge projects and strategies in class.
TECHNOLOGYStudents have access to technology whereby they can incorporate technology into the regular curriculum to ensure that they become comfortable with a wide range of applications. Several classroom projects are introduced to enhance common core content. Students use blog posts, operate interactive websites and take part in other educational computer games and lessons. Third, fourth and fifth graders have a Promethean Smart Board in their classes and use tablets/chromebooks for their daily lessons.DIGITAL CLASSROOMSUse of projector with tablet: The digital teacher uses the projected tablet screen to display and write most notes and work in class. S/he has more instructional time because problems or lecture notes are already ready for class and don't need to be written during class time. Furthermore, s/he has all the notes/problems that were written or worked during class, and these can be saved, emailed, or posted on-line. The digital teacher can also pull up student screens on the main display to show to the class, or to have students work problems for the class.Moving towards using less paper: The digital classroom takes advantage of being able to write on the tablet in a variety of programs because it makes that written work available anytime and anywhere. Students can submit their assignments to digital drop-boxes before class even begins, and teachers can carry them anywhere with their tablets. Students and teachers both retain copies of documents shared with each other, and they can collaborate on-line. The teachers can retain copies of annotations made on student work.Modeling of the use of the tablet: Teachers and administrators use their tablets in school meetings to take notes. This modeling of digital note-taking occurs because we would not ask students to do something which we ourselves do not believe in. Furthermore, by taking the leap to do this ourselves, we increase our understanding of the process and we open doors for our own shared productivity and professional practice.Use of digital resources and digital tools: The digital teacher routinely uses digital resources and has his/her students use them for a variety of purposes including research, texts, and multimedia. Library databases are utilized to reach richer sources of information including peer-reviewed journals and expert-edited references books. Digital versions of text books replace the paper version for in-class use. Students can easily navigate and use the digital resources and are able to annotate and insert comments on them.
Our program is directed by Dr. Sharon Johnson, professional motivational speaker and trainer. Dr. J. offers monthly meetings to a selected group of high achieving students where they learn character traits and leadership skills. Students visit the Mayor of the City of Pembroke Pines office at the end of the school year. They have the opportunity to interview one of the city commissioners, learn about the city’s history, and ask questioins in the Mayor’s Chamber.
In-School Bowler’s Ed Curriculum actively engages students in a sufficient amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity to improve or maintain their physical health and well-being. The curriculum leads students through team-based cardiovascular activities requiring coordination, timing and concentration!
An interactive reading and mathematics program proven to predict student performance, that pinpoints student needs down to the sub-skill level, and ongoing progress monitoring shows whether students are on track to achieve end-of-year targets.
